About
Peter Ivy
Peter Ivy is the founder of the glassware brand that bears his name.
An artist and craftsman who handles everything from design to production himself.
He is also the creative director.
He creates artistic and highly functional vessels.
He grew up in Austin, Texas, and after working as a carpenter and restoring cars at a young age, he developed an interest in art.
He then earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design.
He has served as a faculty member at his alma mater and Massachusetts College of Art.
Seeking a broader and richer experience, and guided by his curiosity and insatiable desire to explore, he came to Japan in 2002. For the next five years, he taught at the Glass Department of Aichi University of Education, where he endeavored to educate the next generation by imparting his knowledge and experience. This experience led him to place a greater emphasis on form and simplicity, which remains the foundation of his work today.
As his passion for glass production grew, he moved to a rural area of Toyama in 2007.
I created a handmade workshop in the barn of an old house.
His minimalist approach to glassware contrasted with the Western-style decorative glassware sold at the time.
He has been widely praised both at home and abroad as a pioneer of new trends in glass art.
Still a teacher at heart, he is passionate about passing on knowledge to the next generation, and has established a second product line at his workshop to further his craft. Building on the centuries-old master-apprentice system, he has created a new business model for his workshop, and currently teaches glassmaking to trainees from all over Japan.
Based on this philosophy, the workshop is a valuable place where artisans can develop their technical skills, creativity, and practical abilities.
